Malaysian Education

Malaysian Education

As one of Britain's colonial countries, Malaysian education is based on the formation of the British educational foundation. In Malaysia, education is divided into pre-school, primary, secondary, pre-university and higher education (university). The Ministry of Education is responsible for educational affairs up to secondary education while tertiary education is overseen by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. The Malaysian government has invested heavily in the field of education, designed to create the core of transnational education to attract more international students. One of the well-known programmes is EduCity Iskandar Malaysia. On his visit to Malaysia on 22 November 2015, Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang mentioned that Malaysia has the most complete bilingual education system in the world. It has trained countless bilingual talents and is very suitable as the first leg for the growing China mainland enterprises to the world.

Malaysia offers good quality but cost-effective educational systems in both public and private institutions, making Malaysia one of the most preferred higher education destinations today.

Branch Campuses

World-class universities have set up branch campuses that offer internationally recognised degrees in collaboration with universities abroad. These universities offer undergraduate and post-graduate degree programmes in Malaysia that are identical to their main campuses overseas.

Twinning Courses

The private institutes in Malaysia also offer twinning programmes with other well-known universities throughout the world. Twinning courses are Malaysia’s first higher education system. The 1997 financial crisis sparked the implementation of this system to relieve parents of the financial burden at that point of time. In twinning programmes, Malaysian educational institutions normally collaborate with well-known universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, New Zealand, France as well as Germany. The degrees will be awarded by both universities. Twinning programmes can be classified to 3+0, 2+1 or 1+2. For a 3+0 degree programme, the student completes all three years of education at the Malaysian institution. For 1+2 and 2+1, the students pursue the first 1 or 2 years in Malaysia and the final part overseas.
